The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day today over the government’s move to suspend 11 members for repeatedly raising the Telangana issue in the House. The BJP-led Opposition members were also demanding a statement from the Prime Minister on the missing files related to coal block allocations. Presiding Officer Francisco Sardinha tried to calm the members but he went unheeded, forcing him to adjourn the House for the day. The House witnessed two adjournments on the two issues. Earlier, the House witnessed uproarious scenes on the government’s move to suspend 11 members from Andhra Pradesh for continuously raising anti-Telangana slogans. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath, who moved the motion, requested Speaker Meira Kumar to suspend these members for the rest of the session to ensure smooth functioning of the House. He said the House has not been able to transact any business since the beginning of the session on the 5th of this month. Leader of Opposition, Mrs Sushma Swaraj, supported by other opposition leaders, strongly protested the motion. Mrs Swaraj said that her party is in favour of Telangana state, but the manner in which the ruling Congress had announced the creation of a separate state is not acceptable. The House witnessed heated exchanges between the treasury and the opposition members over the issue even as the agitating members, seven from Congress and four from Telugu Desam Party, were in the well of the House.
Earlier, responding to the opposition demand for a statement by Prime Minister on the missing files, Mr Kamal Nath said the government has nothing to hide on the matter and the Coal Minister is ready to make a statement. He said the Prime Minister can intervene in the matter if a discussion takes place on the issue
