Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for a brief period during the question hour today as opposition members disrupted the
proceedings over several issues including Wal-mart and reservation in
promotions to SCs and STs.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice during the Question Hour on Walmart issue. Before adjourning the Rajya Sabha initially for half-an-hour, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari remarked that a situation has arisen in which the Chair has to helplessly watch the frequent disruptions during the question hour. Mr Ansari said that he proposed to call a meeting of the Rules Committee to decide on its timing. He observed that he has two options — either to shift the timing of the question hour or dispense with it altogether. When the House
re-assembled, Mr Venkiah Naidu of the BJP pleaded with the Chair to
suspend the question hour to take Wal-mart issue for which his party
had given a notice. He said the disclosure by the world retail giant
Walmart taking India's name is a serious matter. As the opposition
continued to insist on taking up the Walmart issue, the Chairman
adjourned for 20 minutes till Noon.
In the Lok Sabha also members belonging to SP, BSP, Trinamool
Congress and DMK, trooped into the well in support of their demands
soon after the House met in the morning. BJP and Left party members
were shouting slogans from their benches. Amidst pandemonium, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House till Noon.
