A Parliamentary panel has recommended a thorough probe by independent scientists and environmentalists into the entire Bt Brinjal issue, from approval stage to imposition of moratorium on its commercial cultivation. It has also suggested expeditious evaluation of research reports on Bt Brinjal by a public sector agency instead of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) in view of the conflict of interest.Chairman Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture Basudev Acharia said at a press conference in New Delhi that probe should cover the period right from beginning to the imposing of a moratorium on Bt. Brinjal's commercialisation by the government in February 2010.The committee made various recommendations after placing their report in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The committee examined about 1,462 documents, 467 memorandum and other relevant data.
