Parl logjam over FDI ends, LS to discuss issue on Dec 4 & 5

The stalemate over the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) issue came to an end today with the government agreeing to a discussion in both the Houses of Parliament under Rules that entail voting. In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar said that she has received 30 notices for discussion on FDI under the Rule 184. Sources in the Lok Sabha Secretariat said discussion will take place on 4th and 5th of December. Welcoming the Speaker's decision, the Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj assured the Chair that Parliament will function smoothly.

The government also agreed to hold discussion in the Rajya Sabha on FDI under Rule 168 that provides for voting. This was agreed at an all party meeting of the leaders in the Upper House, convened by Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari. However, the date and the time for the discussion will be finalized later in consultations with political parties.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after an adjournment on issues including FDI and reservations in promotions for SC and ST candidates in government jobs.

AIR Correspondent reports that no legislative business was transacted in both the Houses for first four days of the on-going winter session as FDI in retail and other issues stalled the proceedings .
