Both the Houses of Parliament could not transact any legislative business for the fourth day today due to uproar over mainly on the issue of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments before being adjourned finally for the day. The BJP and the Left parties continued to press for a debate on FDI under a rule that entails voting.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day at noon and the Lok Sabha at 2 PM. Earlier, the Lower House witnessed the Left and the AIADMK members carrying placards for discussion on FDI with a provision for voting. Members belonging to AIADMK and CPI rushed to the well while BJP members continued to raise slogans against FDI from their benches. DMK members raised the issue of recent revelations by a former CAG official in the 2G spectrum case.
Mr Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress was allowed by the Chair to make a statement in the Lok Sabha regarding his resignation from the Council of Ministers. He criticized the UPA government with taking unilateral decisions in hiking diesel prices, putting a cap on subsidized cooking gas cylinders and allowing 51 per cent FDI in the multi-brand retail sector.
As soon as the Rajya Sabha re-assembled at noon after its hour-long adjournment, Samajwadi Party members trooped into the well opposing any reservation for SCs and STs in government job promotions as demanded by Bahujajan Samaj Party.
AIR Correspondent reports that now the two Houses will meet on Thursday, as tomorrow being a gazetted holiday on account of the birth day of Guru Nanak.
