Paris talks: Negotiators optimistic of clinching climate deal

Negotiators from across the planet are working tirelessly at the Paris climate summit to wrap up a 195-nation UN climate-saving deal tomorrow, one day later than the original deadline.

A fresh draft negotiating text incorporating major progress and differences was unveiled yesterday after intense negotiations at Paris. This new shorter draft incorporates a key issues raised by India of "sustainable lifestyle". India has earlier attacked the developed countries for adopting "extravagant" lifestyles compared to its "need based consumption".

India today said several of its concerns on climate change have not been incorporated in the new draft. It include voluntary pledges of nations. India also said that the goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius from pre-industrial times will require developed countries to "massively" reduce their emissions. Indian delegation led by Environment & Climate Minister Prakash Javadekar strongly put across its point that durable agreement at Paris "cannot" be crafted by "diluting" historical responsibilities or by putting the polluters and the victims at the same level.

The final text of the agreement is likely to be published today and a formal gathering of the parties, called a plenary session, would then convene to approve the outcome.

Global climate talks are taking longer than planned to overcome disputes and will last an extra day into Saturday, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said. He told French BFMTV that he would present a new compromise text of a deal to combat global warming tomorrow morning, aiming for an accord among almost 200 nations around midday, and not on Friday as originally planned.

"But the atmosphere is good, things are positive, things are going in the right direction," he said. The talks, which began on November 29, had been due to end today.
