Paris agreement meets India's broad expectations : Javadekar

India has been able to secure its interest and that of the developing countries in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Making a suo-moto statement in both Houses of Parliament, Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar said the Paris agreement meets the broad expectations of India. Reading out his statement in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Javadekar said that the agreement recognizes the imperatives of climate justice and sustainable life styles as manifested in patterns of consumption and production with developed countries taking the lead.

It also recognizes the specific needs and special circumstances of the developed countries, which are vulnerable to effects of climate change. He said India has always highlighted the urgent need of adaptation to deal with the impact of climate change and it is a matter of happiness to New Delhi that the agreement is not mitigation-centric and includes adaptation, finance, technology and capacity buildings as equal pillars.

He said the agreement mandates an obligation for developed countries to provide financial resources to developing countries. Other countries may also contribute but on a voluntary basis, which will not dilute the obligation of the developed countries. The Minister made the statement in the House amid uproar by main opposition Congress on Arunachal Pradesh governor's issue.

Earlier, the Minister made a similar statement in the Lok Sabha saying that the Paris Agreement is based on the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities of which India has been a strong advocate. The Minister said, the agreement supports the efforts to harmonize development with environment while protecting the interest of the most vulnerable. The Minister represented India in Conference of Parties under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which adopted agreement on 12th of this month.
