The Kirit Parikh committee has recommended freeing of petrol and diesel prices and raising the LPG rate by 100 rupees a cylinder and kerosene by 6 rupees a litre. Speaking to media after submitting the report to the petroleum Minister, Mr. Murli Deora in New Delhi today, Mr. Parikh said the de-regulation of the petrol and diesel prices could result in an increase of 3 rupees per litre of petrol and 3 to 4 rupees for diesel. The report which will be placed before the Cabinet next week, says that a viable long-term strategy for pricing major petroleum products is required. It should limit the fiscal burden on government and keep the domestic oil industry financially healthy and competitive.AIR correspondent says that the 88 page report has also suggeted that the prices of PDS kerosene can be raised every year in line with the growth in per capita agricultural GDP at nominal prices. It has also said that after increasing the LPG by 100 rupees a cylinder, the price could be periodically revised based on increase in paying capacity as reflected in the rise in per capita income. It said that once an effective targeting system is in place, the subsidy in domestic LPG should be discontinued for all others, except the BPL households.
