Para athletes from 26 countries compete in 2010 CWG alongwith main events

The Para sports events are also being held alongwith the main events at the Commonwealth Games. South African Toit Natalie and Williams Annabell Josephhine have won gold medals in two events of free style swimming. AIR correspondent reports, it was at Victoria in 1994 that para-sports first appeared as a demonstration sport, with 55 athletes competing in three events, but, the medals at these Games did not count toward the overall medal tally. Para-sports were first included in a fully inclusive sports programme in the Commonwealth Games in 2002 at Manchester. 158 para-sports athletes from 20 nations competed for 10 medals in five sports disciplines. In the current Commonwealth Games, 15 gold medals are at stake, six each in swimming and athletics, one in Table Tennis and two in power lifting. Para athletes from 26 countries are taking part in these four sporting disciplines. The athletes in these games belong to four different disability groups.
