Panel to look into issues relating to catering services on Indian railways: Govt

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu today said a committee has been set up to examine the issues relating to catering services on Indian railways. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Mr Prabhu said steps are being taken to ensure that good quality and hygienic food is served to the passengers. <br/><br/>Mr Prabhu said an all India helpline number 138 is in operation for rail users to lodge complaints and suggestions regarding food and catering services.The minister also informed the House that there is quality assurance mechanism through third party audits to ensure quality of catering services. Mr Prabhu also said a new catering policy was introduced from July 21st 2010 to provide hygienic, good quality affordable food to the travelling public. He said one of the salient features of the catering policy is to ensure availability of quality food for not so affluent classes of passengers by provision of Janta food and affordable regional cuisine.
