Government has mooted the idea of conducting a single entrance examination for admission to engineering and technical courses including the Indian Institutes of Technology. The proposed National Aptitude Test will benefit more than seven lakh students annually. The panel set up to re-look at the test methodology of selections and having a common system for admissions to the various engineering colleges in the country submitted its report to the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal yesterday. The report states that the single examination will reduce psychological and financial stress on students and give more emphasis to Class 12th results than coaching. The report adds that at present students have to appear in more than 150 entrance examinations to get into different engineering colleges. The Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister has also recommended a single national examination for admission to higher education institutions including medical and technical courses in the country.
