In Karnataka, pandemonium and chaos prevailed during the Speaker's election in the State Assembly on Wednesday. <br/><br/>Opposition Members, who were demanding postponement of Speaker's election following the sad demise of film star Vishnuvardhan, rushed to the well of the house and attempted to snatch the mike in front of Speaker’s podium. <br/><br/>Mr Yogish Bhat, who was in the Chair, moved the motion and after brief proceedings announced BJP candidate K G Bopaiah as elected amidst slogan shouting and throwing handpicked missiles at the Speaker’s chair. <br/><br/>Ruling BJP has 123 members, including five independents in the 224-member Assembly. The Congress which had fielded its candidate with the support of Janata Dal (S) had the support of 101 MLAs.<br/><br/>Later, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) leaders submitted a memorandum to Governor Hans Raj Bharadwaj alleging that the election to the Speaker was not according to the provisions of rule 7 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Assembly. They urged the Governor to intervene in the matter and declare the election of the Speaker as null and void and order fresh election.<br/><br/>After adoption of the motion, the newly elected Speaker K G Boppaiah adjourned the Assembly sine die. Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah charged that the treasury benches rushed through the motion as they feared losing the election due to dissident activities within BJP.
