Panchayat elections in four districts of Manipur began today amidst strict security. About six lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. Over 4,000 candidates are in the fray. Polling began at 1,516 polling stations in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal districts at 7 in the morning and will end at 4 pm. AIR correspondent reports that polling has been so far peaceful. Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC were imposed in the area for smooth conduct of the elections. The counting of votes will be taken up on September 17.
