Panama flagged MV Rak Carrier continues to leak oil at the rate of 8-10 tonnes per day. The Directorate General of shipping on Wednesday held a review meeting to take stock of the situation. The Directorate has directed ONGC to release a suitable specialized diving support vessel to undertake the preliminary assessment of the oil being released from the sunken ship. Expert divers would also be engaged to identify the source of leak and if possible to plug such leak to check the outflow. The authorities have also identified Titan Salvage to de-bunker the remaining oil entrapped in the bunker tanks. The Directorate is also open to the idea of seeking expertise of International Tanker Owner Pollution Federation to assist in the cleanup operation. Meanwhile, Coast Guard Ships Varuna and Amrit Kaur and Dornier aircraft continue to combat the oil spill by spraying Oil Spill Dispersant to neutralise oil patches. Coast Guard also claims that no fresh tar balls were today reported on beaches. It added that Coast Guard volunteers continue to assist local administration in beach clean up operations. Also, statutory investigation into this shipping casualty and oil Pollution incident is still on with crew members being asked to depose before the concerned authorities. The cargo vessel MV Rak sank 25 nautical miles off Mumbai coast on 4th August and started leaking oil two days later. Operation Paryavaran Suraksha was launched immediately by Coast Guard to control the oil slick.
