In a rare honour to the nation's oldest soldier, Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, the Panagarh Air Force Base in West Bengal was today named after him. Air Officer Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal C. Harikumar unveiled the rechristening plaque at a ceremony held at the Panagarh Air Base today. He announced that the crucial Air Force Base in the eastern theatre will now be called Air Force Station Arjan Singh.<br/><br/>Addressing the rechristening ceremony, Air Marshal Harikumar told media-persons that since the Air Base at Panagarh will be further developed technologically. The up-gradation of the Base will help improve connectivity and security as the Base is located in the interiors. <br/><br/>Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, who turned 97 on Thursday, had led the Indian Air Force in the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Chief of Air Staff Arup Raha had last evening announced the renaming of the Air Force Station at a function in New Delhi to mark the birthday of the Marshal Arjan Singh. Military installations are not usually named after individuals, especially when they are alive, a defence spokesperson informed.
