The Palestinian cabinet led by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has resigned in a move to form a new government. Sources say, Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has accepted the resignations and asked Mr. Fayyad to form a new cabinet. The move comes after the fall of Hosni Mubarak in popular protests in Egypt. The new government would focus on implementing a series of recent decisions aimed at ending internal split and promoting national unity. According to sources, the government will pave the way for holding local, parliamentary and presidential elections. Earlier, the Palestinian leadership announced that they would hold national elections by September, though the Islamic Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip rejected new polls under the current circumstances.
