President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas on Friday night submitted a formal application to the UN Secretary General for a full membership in the world body. The application has been submitted despite strong opposition to the move by United States. There were last minute efforts to dissuade Palestine to move the application. Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Mahmoud Abbas made a strong plea to the Secretary General to expedite transmittal of their request to the Security Council. He urged member countries to vote in favour of the full membership. The Palestinian President asserted that the support to the Palestinian cause by member countries would be a victory of truth, freedom, justice, law and international legitimacy. He said, the move would provide tremendous support for peace option and enhance the chances of success of negotiations. Launching a scathing attack on Israel for frequent attacks and killings of innocent people, Mr Abbas said Tel Aviv continues its incursions in the areas of the Palestinian National Authority. He noted that such a policy will destroy the chances of achieving a two state solution which has international backing. He cautioned that this policy threatens to undermine the structure of Palestinian Authority and even its existence. Extending the hands for peacemaking with Israel, Mr Abbas said the two sides need to work together to build bridges of dialogue instead of walls of separation. AIR correspondent covering the General Assembly Session reports from New York that in an unprecedented gesture a large section of the delegates gave Mr Mahmoud Abbas a standing ovation, as he made his way to the podium to deliver his address. India has categorically stated that it will vote in favour of Palestinian bid for full membership in the UN
