Palestine and Syria condemn new Israeli law

Palestinian and Syrian officials have condemned a new Israeli law, which mandates a national referendum ahead of any withdrawal from east Jerusalem or the Golan Heights.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that this step puts obstacles in the way of the political process. Abbas told reporters during the opening of the new headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Ramallah last evening that the Israelis want to tell the whole world that they will not withdraw from Jerusalem or the Golan heights.Syria has also rejected the Israeli Knesset's approval of organizing a referendum before withdrawal from the occupied Golan and East Jerusalem. The official news agency, SANA has quoted Syrian official as saying that the move is is a disregard of the international law and the international community's will which considers the Syrian Golan and East Jerusalem as occupied Arab lands and Israel's decisions to annex them as null and void. The Israeli Parliament known as Knesset, earlier passed a legislation requiring a national referendum on any peace agreement that calls for withdrawal from the Golan Heights or east Jerusalem and does not win a two-thirds majority in parliament.
