Pakistan's attorney general resigns

Pakistan's attorney general Anwar Mansoor Khan today resigned from his position. Mansoor said he tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister due to the uncooperative approach of the Law Ministry over the issue of reopening of Swiss cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Mansoor yesterday informed the Supreme Court that Law Minister Babar Awan and the Law Ministry are not cooperating with him to implement the court orders.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ordered the government to write letters to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Zardari, which have been withdrawn under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), an amnesty imposed by former President Pervez Musharraf in 2007.

The court ruled it as illegal and unconstitutional in December 2009. But till today, the Swiss government said they received no letter from Paksitan and the cases could not be reopened since Zardari has immunity as current president of Pakistan.
