Pakistan Political Crisis: PTV off air as protesters break into office

Political crisis in Pakistan deepened today with official television channel PTV being taken off air after its headquarters were ransacked by anti-government and anti-Nawaz Sharif protesters in Islamabad.

When the protesters stormed the PTV office, Defense Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif was on-air. Army has been called in to control the situation. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan asked his supporters to come out of PTV office as it will harm the anti-government movement.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahir-ul Qadiri claimed that his supporters have achieved major success. He said, his protest is not against the army and reiterated his demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief.

Anti-government protesters who forcibly entered the heavily-guarded Secretariat this morning.

Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to push them back but remained unsuccessful. The protesters damaged vehicles.

The fresh clashes came hours after an emergency meeting of army corps commanders last night who expressed serious concern over the prevailing political turmoil in the country.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahir-ul Qadiri have escalated their demand for the resignation of Prime minister over alleged rigging in last year's poll.
