Pakistan troops recaptured its key naval air base on Monday after a 16-hour battle at port city of Karachi. Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said four of the six militants who were involved in the armed raid on the country's Naval air base have been killed. He said two of the men who carried out the attack managed to escape. The minister put the number of killed armed forces personnel at 10 and the injured at 15. Talking to newsmen in Karachi, Mr. Malik said two terrorists were killed by the security forces in clashes, another blew himself up in one of the buildings while body of the fourth is said to be in the debris. He said two naval surveillance planes P3C Orion were destroyed by the terrorists who were equipped with rocket propelled grenades, LMGs and hand grenades. Mr. Malik said 17 foreigners including 11 Chinese and 6 Americans, who were there to give training to naval personnel about Orion planes, were rescued by the Naval commandos. He said the attack started at 10. 30 pm last night and clashes continued till the operation was completed by personnel of Navy and Rangers by 3.30 pm today. Mr. Malik said the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have claimed responsibility for the attack.Reacting to the attacks on naval air base in Karachi, New Delhi has said the assault was very organised with very sophisticated weapons used in the attack and said India is closely monitoring the situation.The Home Minister Mr. Chidambaram said that India feels sad at the loss of lives in such incidents. The Home Minister said that he had already stated that India lives in a troubled neighbourhood and has to remain constantly vigilant.
