Pakistani officials say troops backed by artillery and fighter jets have killed 22 militants in the tribal region of Keran close to the Afghan border. There is no independent confirmation of these figures. The army has been carrying out offensive inside Keran in Waziristan but many militants are believed to have fled from there to neighbouring regions. The Senior US Army General David Petraeus who is expected to travel to Pakistan today described Pakistani operations against the Taliban as impressive.
