In Pakistan, floods caused by heavy monsoon rains have killed more than 300 people over the last three days. Authorities say most of the deaths are in northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, where regional government officials have declared a state of emergency. Hundreds of homes, bridges and roadways have been destroyed in the province, including the areas of Peshawar, Swat Valley and the Charsadda district. At least 400,000 people have been stranded in villages, in the worst flooding to hit the northwestern region in nearly 100 years. Pakistani military officials have put more army troops on high alert as a result of the worsening floods. Authorities say the heavy rains have impeded the ability to reach affected areas by helicopter.
