Pak Indus Water Commission team concludes Jammu visit

A team of Indus Water Commission of Pakistan led by Sheraj Jameel Memon concluded its three day visit of Jammu yesterday. During their visit ,the Pak team along-with Mr. G Rangarajan, Indus Water Treaty Commissioner of India and other Central and State Government officers inspected the site for artificial lake on River Tawi , the head-works of two main canals of Jammu-Ranbir and Pratap canals, which are the tributaries of Chenab and Salal Hydro Electric Project in Reasi district . They sought detailed drawings of the Artificial Lake to be constructed on River Tawi as the Pakistan had apprehensions about the violation of Indus Water Treaty in the construction of artificial lake. The artificial lake on River Tawi is being created by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department of the State for providing irrigation facilities to large chunk of agriculture land besides giving aesthetic look to the winter capital (Jammu) of the State. During their inspection of 420-Mega Watt Salal hydro power project in Reasi district , the Pak panel held discussion with officials of Salal Project on various aspects of the dam and discharge and storage of water from the project. The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a water-sharing treaty between India and Pakistan, brokered by World Bank. The treaty was signed in Karachi on September 19, 1960 by the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Muhammad Ayub Khan.
