Pak court accepts plea to declare Kasab as fugitive

A Pakistani anti-terror court has accepted a plea to declare Ajmal Kasab a proclaimed offender or a fugitive. The court is conducting the trial of seven suspects for their involvement in the 26/11 attacks. It accepted an application today from the prosecution, which sought the court to declare Kasab a proclaimed offender or a fugitive. The application was submitted by the Federal Investigation Agency, which is probing Pakistani links to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The court admitted the application and scheduled the next hearing for March 20.

The Agency's plea has become necessary as a bench of the Lahore High Court had ruled earlier this week that Kasab’s trial cannot be not be separated from the other seven accused. The High Court also ruled that Kasab’s confessional statement to Indian authorities cannot be used in Pakistani courts. Legal experts said this could significantly affect the Pakistani prosecution team’s case as Kasab’s statement was a crucial part of it.
