The unseeded Indo-Czech pair of Leander Paes and Stepanek today inched closer to their first-ever Australian Open title by making it to the doubles quarter-finals but it was all over for Indian duo Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna. Paes and his partner defeated third seeds Michael Llodra of France and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic 7-5 7-6(2) in a hard-fought third round match. They now await winner of the other third round match between the pairs of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer and Eric Butorac and Bruno Soares. Paes had won all the other three Grand Slam titles and Australian Open is only trophy eluding him in men's doubles. In another men's doubles third round match, fourth seeded Bhupathi and Bopanna were stunned 6-7(6) 2-6 by 13th seeded American pair of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram. Meanwhile, India's challenge ended in the junior singles competitions, with the defeats of Rutuja Bhonsle, Ratnika Batra and Arjun Khade. In men's singles Rafael Nadal entered into the Australian Open quarter finals today. He comfortably defated Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-4 6-2. In another match Roger Federer ended the Australian Open hopes of local Bernard Tomic today with a 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory in the fourth round. The 30-year-old Federer, who is bidding for his 17th grand slam title, will now meet Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter-finals in their first grand slam match up since the Argentine beat the Swiss in the final of the 2009 US Open.
