Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, with their team-mates, today advanced to the second round of the Australian Open Tennis tournament at Melbourne. In the Women's Doubles first round, the sixth seeded Indo-Zimbabwean pair of Sania Mirza and Cara Black defeated the Aussie team of Arina Rodionova and Tammi Patterson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. In the Men's Doubles opening round, the Indo-Pak team of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi beat the Australian-French combination of Rameez Junaid and Adrian Mannarino, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. They next take on the British pair of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins. In the Singles, World Number One Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki made it to the third round. The first round outing of Indo-Czech pair, Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek was today cancelled due to extreme heat conditions. They were scheduled to clash with the Czech pair of Lukas Dlouhy and Lukas Rosol. Meanwhile, there was severe disruption in today's packed schedule of 32 singles matches plus doubles as organisers suspended play at the Australian Open due to temperatures hitting 42 Celsius or 107.6 Fahrenheit. Temperatures were forecast to remain high tomorrow before cooling sharply on Saturday.
