Oz FM accepts attacks on Indians as racial; assures to bring culprits to justice

Australia has again accepted that some of the attacks on Indians are racist in nature. The visiting Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told reporters in New Delhi today that Australia has zero tolerance to any such attack and the culprits will be brought to justice. Earlier Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had also accepted it. Regretting such attacks, Mr. Smith said, several initiatives have been taken by his government to check such incidents. The Australian Foreign Minister said, however, both the countries have agreed that the issue should not be allowed to affect the bilateral ties which have grown immensely in the last two years. Mr.Smith said that the Australian criminal research agency has been roped in to study the issue and suggest remedial measures. He said there have been convictions in many cases while investigation is going on in 70 cases. The minister had a series of meeting in recent months with his Indian counterpart S M Krishna over the issue. The visiting dignitary will also discuss with the government the security arrangements for Commonwealth Games and the facilities for the games. Expressing satisfaction over the coordination and cooperation that the commonwealth countries are receiving from India over the issue, he said, everyone has to be absolutely vigilant till the completion of the game. The Hockey World Cup has been regarded a censored dry run for the Commonwealth Games.
