Australia defeated hosts England by 49 runs in the fifth and final one day international cricket match at Southampton last night, to clinch the series, 2-1. Opting to bat first, the Aussies got off to a nervy start, losing 3 wickets for just 48 runs. But, the fourth wicket stand of 163 between all rounder Shane Watson and skipper Michael Clarke steadied the Aussie ship, as the visitors posted 298 in 49.1 overs. Watson made an exceptional 143, while Clarke scored 75. For England, all-rounder Ben Stokes was the pick of the bowlers. He recorded an ODI best of five wickets for 61 runs. Debutant Chris Jordan, in for injured fast bowler Steven Finn, took three for 47. Chasing 299 for victory, the hosts were dismissed for 249 in 48 overs. Medium Pacer James Faulkner bagged the maximum of 3 wickets. Watson was adjudjed man of the match, while Clarke was named man of the series. The first match was abandoned without a ball being bowled, while the third ODI ended with no result. Australia had won the second one dayer by 88 runs, with England bagging the fourth by 3 wickets.
