Overall situation in violence affected areas of Assam improves

The Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram will make a two-day visit to Assam beginning tomorrow. He will visit the violence hit areas and relief camps in Kokrajhar and adjoining areas.

Meanwhile, the overall situation of the violence hit districts are limping back to normal and there were no reports of violence since Thursday. Official sources said that around 4 lakh people who have taken shelter at relief camps, will return to their homes very soon amidst proper security. Sixty five companies of Para-military forces have been deployed in Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Chirang and Baksa districts. Flag march by the army is continuing. Day curfew has been relaxed in the violence marred districts. So far 53 people have lost thier lives and another 57 sustained injuries.

Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh yesterday announced 300 crore rupee relief package for the affected people. He assured to provide 2 lakh rupees each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the next of kin of those killed. Fifty thousand rupees each will be given to the seriously injured. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi already announced an ex-gratia relief of six lakh rupees each to the families of those killed. Eighty nine additional doctors along with nurses and para medical staff, 22 ambulances and Mobile Medical Vans with medicines are being deployed. So far there is no report of outbreak of any disease at the 270 relief camps.
