Over-speeding caused TN train mishap: Trivedi

Railway Minister Mr. Trivedi said that an enquiry has been ordered to probe the cause of yesterday’s train accident at Chitheri in Tamil Nadu in which 10 people were killed and 86 Injured.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the accident site, Mr. Trivedi said the preliminary investigation has found that the accident took place due to over-speeding of the electric train that rammed into a stationary train. He also added that the real cause for the accident would be ascertained after the completion of investigation, also whether the accident occurred due to a human error or a technical fault. He said the train driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

The Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs to the kin of those killed in the accident; Rs.1 lakh would be given to those grievously injured; and Rs. 25,000 to those who suffered minor injuries.

Later, Mr. Trivedi visited the hospital and consoled the injured and the kin of the deceased. The railway track affected by the accident have been restored, and train services have resumed. Our correspondent reports that the injured passengers have not yet recovered from the shock of the accident.
