Over 97 pc licensed arms deposited ahead of Punjab assembly polls

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr S Karuna Raju on Wednesday said that complying to directions of Election Commission of India (ECI), as many as 3,76,542 licensed weapons have been deposited ahead of state Assembly Elections, scheduled to be held on February 20.<br />''<br />''He said that this is 97.43 percent of the total 3lakh 90 thousand 275 licensed weapons, whereas, 72 without licensed weapons were seized in the state. He said that some of the persons having licenced weapons including security personnel at nationalised and private banks and other persons facing security issues will have to approach the Deputy Commissioner for any genuine exemptions and complaint redressal.<br />''<br />''Dr Raju also informed that after the Model Code of Conduct came into force in the state for Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, various enforcement teams have seized valuables worth 313 crores 44 lakh rupees in violation of code till February 1.<br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Giving details, he said that the surveillance teams have seized 28.91 lakh litres of liquor worth 15 crore 49 lakh rupees. Similarly, the enforcement wings have also recovered psychotropic substances amounting to 276 crores 51 lakh rupees besides confiscating unaccounted cash of 20 crores rupees, he added.</span><br />
