Over 96 per cent voting in UP legislstive elections

In Uttar Pradesh more than 96 per cent voters have cast their votes for biennial elections for 36 seats of Legislative Council from local bodies’ constituencies. Elected members of the local bodies, three tier Panchayat bodies, MLAs and MPs were eligible to the vote in this election. Our Lucknow correspondent Sunil Shukla reports that counting of votes will take place day after tomorrow. The election commission has directed that votes of nominated members of Local Bodies and Panchayts would not be counted as Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has restrained them from voting. <br/><br/>In Pratapgarh constituency 4 nominated members of local bodies could not cast their votes after Election Commission’s directions in the light of High Court order. In some constituencies including Badaun, Ballia, Sonbhadra, Sitapur, Lucknow, Raiberaly, Sultanpur and Ghazipur more than 99 percent voters have cast their votes. In Ballia Samajwadi Party MPs Janeshwar Mishra and Neeraj Shekhar are among those who did cast their votes. Minimum 96.29 percent votes have been cast in Jaunpur constituency.<br/><br/>As many as 193 candidates are in fray. Nearly 923 polling booths were set spread over 35 districts for 1 lakh 33 thousand voters. Maximum 43 polling booths were set up at Fatehpur Kanpur constituency while minimum 15 are for Barabanki and Lakhimpur Kheri.<br/><br/>The election commission had deployed 70 observers and of them 35 are from other states along with micro observers to ensure free and fair poll. Massive security arrangements were also in place to conduct independent polling. No untoward incident is reported from any part of the state during polling.
