Over 80 pc voting reported in Imphal Municipal Council Elections

In Manipur, Over 80 percent polling was reported in the Imphal Municipal Council Elections on Wednesday according to preliminary assessment of the State Election Commission. Voters came out in large numbers even before polling began at 8 in the morning.Voters braved the scorching heat to exercise franchise for the election of 26 Councilors and 53 Ward Development Committee Members in the urban local body election. One Councilor and one Ward Development Committee Member were already declared elected uncontested.Voting for the municipal election was by and large peaceful except some untoward incidents. At the Mahabali Rongmei Lower Primary School Polling Station of Ward Number 19, police resorted to blank fire to control the mob in which Congress and BJP workers attacked each other. Five persons were injured in the incident.Altogether 93 candidates including 25 of Congress, 10 each of BJP and NCP, six of Trinamool Congress and four of CPI are in the fray for the election of 26 Councilors of the Municipal Council. Counting of votes will be held on the 29th of May.
