Over 80 Andhra legislators resign over Telangana

In Andhra Pradesh, over 80 legislators including 11 State Ministers today tendered their resignations pressing for statehood for Telangana. The ruling congress legislators from Telangana region including Ministers sent their resignation papers to the Deputy Speaker Vikramarka this morning. So far, 11 Ministers and 26 MLAs of ruling Congress party have put in their papers while 12 MLCs also resigned. Thirty three legislators of the opposition Telugu Desam Party from the region have also resigned after their Congress counterparts tendered resignations. The en-mass resignations are still continuing with both ruling Congress and Opposition Telugu Desam party legislators sending their papers by hand and by fax to the office of the Deputy Speaker. Meanwhile, the government today said that consultation process is continuing on the Telangana Statehood demand and a final decision on the issue will be taken only when it will be over. Talking to the media in New Delhi, Home Minister P Chidambaram said, it is an extremely sensitive and complex issue. He appealed to the MLAs, one Rajya Sabha MP and Andhra Pradesh Ministers from the Telangana region to be patient. Mr. Chidambaram clarified that the statement made by him on 9 th of December in 2009 was made on behalf of the Government. The statement had said that the Centre would initiate the process for the formation of a separate Telangana state. He said, but, the Centre again made a statement on the 23 rd of the same month, in which it was emphasised that more consultations are needed on the issue.
