Over 78 pc voting recorded for third phase of WB assembly polls

About 78.3 per cent polling was recorded in the third phase of Assembly Elections in West Bengal on Wednesday. The percentage of voting in the last assembly elections in 2006 was recorded at 77.9 per cent while during Lok Sabha elections in 2009 it was 78.94 per cent. Mr. Zutshi said, 75 constituencies in four districts went to polls on Wednesday. The districts include North 24 Pargana, South 24 Pargana, Kolkata North and Kolkata South. He said that like the last two phases, the third phase also remained incident-free and peaceful. Mr. Zutshi said that no incident of booth capturing or violence was reported from any place.In reply to a query Mr. Zutshi said that the Commission had written a letter to the President of Trinamool Congress inquiring about allegations regarding transactions with two nationalised banks. He also informed that the Commission has issued a notice to Mr. Anil Basu, a contestant in Assembly elections, seeking a written reply by 30th of this month regarding alleged violation of model code of conduct. Mr. Zutshi further added that the Commission is also collating the evidences on the complaints of CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechuri.AIR Kolkata correspondent reports that 19 Presiding officers were removed for dereliction of duties in North 24 Pargana including three in Kolkata. Five polling officials were also removed on health grounds. 106 Electronic Voting Machines have been replaced due to technical snags. State Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta informed that around 100 persons were rounded off from the three districts as a preventive measure. The special observer appointed by the Election Commission Mr S.Srinivasan has expressed satisfaction over the voting in the three districts. In today's polling the fate of Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharya and some of his important Ministers like Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta, Housing Minister Goutam Deb, and Land Reforms Minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah was sealed in the EVMs. From Trinamool Congress significant candidates were Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Partha Chatterjee, Mayor of Kolkata ,Shovan Chatterjee, the former FICCI general secretary, Amit Mitra and the former Chief Secretary, Manish Gupta.Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress Chief Mamta Banerji has alleged that CPIM cadres resorted to rigging in a number of booths including Jadavpur, the constituency of the Chief Minister. She said, reports of rigging also came from Bijpur and Rajarhat. The CPIM has rubbished the claim of Ms Banerji. Left Front Chairman Biman Bose has demanded re-polling in 40 booths.
