Over 70 pc voters exercise franchise in J&K Panchayat polls

Over 70 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the 11th round of 16-phase panchayat polls in ten blocks in Jammu and Kashmir amid unprecedented security arrangements on Wednesday. AIR correspondent reports, that despite boycott calls by separatists, including breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) and militant attacks on contesting candidates, people have again showed overwhelming response in today’s polls. People, including women, were seen marching towards their respective polling stations much before the polling began at some centres. Hundreds of state police and CRPF personnel were seen deployed outside the polling stations to thwart any attempt to disrupt the process. Polling was held today to elect 308 Sarpanches and 1568 Panches in ten blocks . Bhalwal block in Jammu district recorded impressive 86.45 % polling followed by 84.43% in Marmat block of the mountainous district of Doda. In Kashmir Valley, Qazigund block in Anatnag district saw brisk polling with 82 % people exercising their franchise.
