The State Economic Survey for 2013-14, tabled in the Maharashtra state legislature in Mumbai yesterday, said that there are 6,656 hazardous waste generating industries in Maharashtra as on March 31. According to survey, common facilities for management of hazardous waste have been set up at four sites which are located at Taloja and the Trans-Thane Creek Industrial Area of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Thane district, Ranjangaon in Pune district and Butibori in Nagpur district. The state has made it mandatory to install Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in all containers carrying hazardous waste to ensure its proper disposal and so far, 102 hazardous waste transporters have installed these systems.
