Over 60 per cent of voters turned out today in the by-elections to one Lok Sabha and 31 Assembly seats spread over seven states which were by and large peaceful. The polls were held under the watchful eyes of security forces and paramilitary personnel who kept a strict vigil in all the constituencies.<br/><br/>In Uttar Pradesh, more than 51 percent voters exercised their franchise for Firozabad Lok Sabha and 11 assembly seats by elections. As many as 177 candidates including 12 women are in the fray. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that more than 53 percent voters have cast their votes in Firozabad parliamentary seat while more than 49 percent electorates have their exercised their franchise in 11 assembly constituencies. Maximum 60 percent voting has been recorded at Lalitpur assembly seat.In Firozabad constituency a poll personnel was arrested for his alleged involvement in bogus voting. Two persons were injured in clashes at a polling booth during the by poll. Meanwhile Samajwadi Party has demanded re-polling in more than two dozen polling centres at Rari and Isauli assembly seats.<br/><br/>In West Bengal, 65 percent voters have cast their votes in bye election for ten assembly seats in the state. The voting passed off peacefully. The chief state electoral officer Mr. Debasish Sen said in Kolkata that highest 75% polling were recorded in Rajgang constituency in Jalpaiguri district. 14 EVMs were replaced for technical snag. Police arrested 12 persons from East Midnapur and north 24 pargana districts on charges of poll related offence.<br/><br/>In Kerala, an average of 71 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the by-polls to the assembly constituencies of Kannur, Ernakulam and Alappuzha. Kannur registered a voter turn out of 79 per cent, Ernakulam 64 per cent and Alappuzha 71 per cent. Voting was by and large peaceful except a stray incident at Thaththampally in Alapuzha, where two groups clashed with each other over the damaging of a booth committee office. Three persons injured in the incident have been admitted to the hospital. <br/><br/>In Assam, polling for bye-elections to the Dhekiajuli and South Salmara Assembly segments passed off peacefully. According to official sources, around 76 per cent voters exercised their franchise in South Salmara constituency. Over sixty six per cent polling was recorded in Dhekiajuli Assembly segment. 12 candidates are in the fray.<br/><br/>In Chhattisgarh, voting for the lone Vaishalinagar assembly bye-election ended peacefully . Though the final tally of the voting percentage is yet to be received, unofficial sources put it at more than 50. In Rajasthan 55 % polling was recorded in the bye election to Todabhim and Salumbar constituency. <br/><br/>In Himachal Pradesh, 68 percent polling was recorded in Rohru and 65 percent in Jwali seats.<br/><br/>Counting of votes will be held on Tuesday.
