Over 180 killed, more than 1,300 injured in Iran’s twin earthquakes

In Iran, at least 180 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured in two strong earthquakes that struck north-western parts of the country near Tabrez in quick succession yesterday afternoon. The toll is likely to go up since scores of people are still trapped in the debris as recue and relief operations continued overnight. Iran’s Official News Agency IRNA reported that 66 rescue teams are at work, using 40 devices and seven dog squads to detect buried survivors while 185 ambulances had been sent to the area. Tehran University’s Seismological Centre said that the magnitude of the earthquakes was 6.2 and 6 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was 60 kilometers away from Tabrez near the city of Ahar.
