Over 100 people killed in police gunfire in Syrian city Daraa, claim human rights activists

Human rights activists and witnesses in Syria have claimed that more than 100 people were killed by police gunfire in country's southern city of Daraa. Human rights activist Ayman al-Asswad in Daraa said that there are definitely more than 100 dead and the city will need a week to bury its martyrs. Asswad alleged that security forces had used real bullets when firing against demonstrators yesterday. Syrian authorities today told reporters 10 people died in the security forces crackdown on Daraa, a town of 75,000 people that has become a hub for anti-regime protests since March 18. Meanwhile, reports say, some 20,000 people gathered on Thursday in the Syrian city of Daraa for the burial of victims. Syria, which is still under a 1963 emergency law banning demonstrations, is the latest state in the Middle East to witness an uprising against a long-running autocratic regime.
