In, Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir, over 100 people were killed and 200 injured due to cloudburst last night at about 1215 am. Three army personnel have also died in this incident.The main buildings and residential quarters including All India Radio, Leh, Polytechnique Leh, CRPF Camp have been badly damaged. The BSNL Exchange Tower Transmeter tower also damaged.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reached Leh and is monitoring the rescue work. He has also announced relief and exgratia payment worth rupees two crore.The BSNL network was completely damaged, besides the runway of the Leh airport, cutting off the town from the rest of the country. The district hospital and two buildings housing offices of the Union Home Ministry were also affected. Five villages have been hit in the sudden downpour and flashfloods. These included Choglumsar and Shapoo. Old Leh city was among the worst affected. The main bus stand was flattened.Leh is located at a height of 11,500 feet above sea level, 424 kilometres from Srinagar. The worst hit was Choglumsar area, 13 kms from here, where 14 bodies were recovered. The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia relief from the PM's National Relief Fund of one lakh rupees each to the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured.A Defence Ministry spokesperson said the Prime Minister has asked the ministry to ensure prompt assistance to the Leh cloudburst victims. He said, the Defence Minister A K Antony is personally monitoring the operations.The Defence Ministry was also coordinating with the Home Ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir government to provide targeted assistance to the civil administration in the relief and rescue efforts. He said, the Army, Air Force and DRDO establishments in Leh were actively involved in the process.The Air Force, on its part, was working to make the Leh runway, which is covered with six inches of slush following the cloudburst, operational by the evening.A Defence Ministry spokesperson said the Prime Minister has asked the ministry to ensure prompt assistance to the Leh cloudburst victims.
