At least 106 Indian fishermen with their trawlers have been apprehended by the Jaffna fishermen off Sri Lanka coast on Tuesday, allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters and handed over to the Point Pedro police station in Jaffna. Navy Sources have said that they are not involved in the incident and that it is the local fishermen who have caught them fishing in Sri Lankan waters, and have handed them over to the police at Jaffna. The detention of the Indian fishermen comes close on the heels of this month’s meeting between Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G. L Peiris. They had agreed that the use of force could not be justified under any circumstances when dealing with fishermen, after it had been alleged that several Indian fishermen had been killed by the Sri Lankan Navy, which the Navy denied. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna also met Mr. Peiris in Thimpu expressing concern over the treatment of Indian fishermen caught fishing in Sri Lankan waters.Northern Sri Lankan fishermen in many small craft had surrounded the Tamil Nadu trawlers and seized 18 of them.
