Nearly 100 Indian fishermen with their trawlers have been captured by the Jaffna fishermen on Tuesday, allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters and handed over to the Point Pedro police station in Jaffna. Navy Sources have said that they are not involved in the incident and that it is the local fishermen who have caught them fishing in Sri Lankan waters , and have handed them over to the police at Jaffna. The apprehension of the Indian fishermen comes in the wake of this month’s meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G. L Peiris where they concurred that the use of force could not be justified under any circumstances when dealing with fishermen, after it had been alleged that several Indian fishermen had been killed by the Sri Lankan Navy — which allegation the Navy has vehemently denied. Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna also met his counterpart G L Peiris in Thimpu during the first week of February regarding the concerns India had regarding the treatment of Indian fishermen caught fishing in Sri Lankan waters.According to them , Northern Sri Lankan fishermen in many small craft had surrounded the Tamil Nadu trawlers and seized over 20 of them
