Ousted Egypt's President faces new trial for jail break in 2011

In Egypt, the ousted President Mohamed Morsi faces a new trial for jail break in 2011 in addition to espionage and incitement of murder. He has been referred to a criminal court on fresh charges of escaping from Wadi El-Natroun Prison during the January uprising of 2011 against the former President Hosni Mubarak. 132 others will face similar charges which include murdering prison officers. The other defendants include leaders of Muslim Brotherhood, a prominent Qatar-based cleric and members of the Palestinian and Lebanese militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Muslim Brotherhood lawyer Mohamed El-Damati said that the ousted president Mohamed Morsi will be hiring lawyers although he does not recognize the court which is trying him. He told that the move is aimed to prevent the court from appointing a defence attorney to represent him. El-Damati added that so far Morsi’s defence team, of which he is a member, has not seen the papers containing the charges against the former president. Morsi was ousted on July 3 amid mass protests against his rule.

He is currently facing the Ittihadiya case, in which he is alleged to have incited violence against his opponents during the presidential palace clashes in 2012 .Morsi is also standing trial over allegations of espionage where he is accused of collaborating with Hamas, Hezbollah and other organizations to commit terrorist acts in Egypt.
