Orissa to open Special New Born Care Units in all district headquarters

<br/>In a bid to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the state, the Orissa government has decided to open Special New Born Care Units in all the district headquarters hospital by 2012. The districts with high IMR would be given priority and later the units would be set up in all the Sub-divisional Hospitals in phases. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar yesterday. Official sources said currently the special New Born care units are operating in eight district headquarters hospitals. As per the 2008 Statistic , the IMR stood at 69 for every 1000 children. The government had targeted to bring down the IMR to 30 per every one thousand and the Maternity mortality rate to one hundred per every one lakh delivery by 2012. The Chief Minister also directed to launch a massive awareness campaign and involve more and more organisation to achieve the goal.
