Orissa govt to resume land acquisition for Posco project

The Orissa Government is to resume aquiring of land for Posco project from the 18th of this month. The decision was taken at a meeting between the Chief Secretary B K Patnaik, IDCO officials and representatives from the Jagatsinghpur district administration. This follows the the final forest clearance order given for the mega South Korean major to set up the project near Paradip. The work was halted last year at the plant site villages of the project because of a stop work order from the ministry of Environment and Forest. Chairman-cum-managing director of the state owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation Priyabrat Patnaik told reporters in Bhubaneshwar that the land acquisition work will be completed within a month. He said that as per the government's decision, private land of about 300 acres from Dhinkia village will not be acquired as announced by the chief minister. Of the total 4,004 acre of land required for Posco project, 2,900 acre were forest land which needed permission for diversion for setting up the proposed 52,000 crore rupee project. Opponents of the South Korean steel major say they will foil the move.
