The Orissa Cabinet today gave green signal for more concession to the controversial Sri Sri University coming up at Cuttack in Orissa. The Cabinet has reduced the rent and cess on the rent on the 186 acres of land given to the university. It has brought down the rent charge from 1 to 0.25 per cent of the market rate while the cess will be at 0.75 per cent of the rent. The university will save about 80 lakh per annum which was to be paid to the government exchequer. Orissa Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik told media persons after the Cabinet meeting, the concession has been allowed to the university as it comes under the Educational Institutions Act imparting education without any profit. He was, however, silent over the hefty admission fees proposed by the university for MBA and BBA students. In earlier sessions of the Orissa Legislative Assembly, the opposition had made a hue and cry over the proposed Sri Sri University at Cuttack for profit being the only motive for setting up the university. They also alleged heavy kickbacks by the state government for signing MoU with the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Vidya Mandir Trust in 2006.
