The Orissa Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes on the issue of farmers suicide due to alleged crop loss and loan burden. The house was adjourned repeatedly as angry opposition. Congress members stormed into the well and tried to climb the Speaker’s podium over the issue. Congress legislators also displayed posters of farmers who have committed suicide recently.<br/>Attacking Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government for rejecting opposition demand for obituary reference to departed farmers, leader of opposition Mr Bhupinder Singh said since their plea was turned down party MLAs will hold silent prayers for dead farmers. Congress members holding posters staged silent prayers.<br/>The BJP members also staged silent prayers. Things worsened, when Speaker Assembly, Mr Pradip Kumar Amat, gave a ruling that nothing outside the order sheet would be reported in the media which triggered sharp protest from opposition as well media persons covering the proceedings. Angry Congress members troopped into the well alleging attempt to stifle the press. While journalists deciding to boycott proceedings, pandomonium persisted in the house. Parliamentary Minister Mr Raghunanth Mohanty appealed the journalists to end their boycott but they didn’t listen. When the house reassembled, Mr Mohanty appealed the Speaker to reconsider his ruling.<br/>The Speaker said he had no intention to curtail press freedom and has high respect for the fourth estate. Following Speaker’s assurance, the press people ended boycott. However, the house went into turmoil again on farmer’s issue for which it was adjourned till tomorrow.<br/>
