<span style="color: #222222;">Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said, the opposition to Citizenship Amendment Act, NRC and the NPR is motivated and unfair. Addressing reporters in Chennai this evening, he said, citizenship has been given to people of other countries even earlier, like those periods of crisis in Uganda and Sri Lanka and the Bangladesh War of 1971. He recalled the letters written by senior Congress leaders like Ashok Gehlot during the regime of Vajpayee Government to grant citizenship to the minority Hindus of Bangladesh. </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"><br />'' Referring to the National Population Register, Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the details being sought are only to help evolve effective policies for development. He emphasized that the population register has been introduced by Mr P Chidambaram as the Minister during the UPA Government in 2010. When asked about the additional details being sought, he said, 10 years back, the mobile phone penetration and email accounts have been relatively low and reasoned that, as they are available for most of the citizens now, the details are also being sought now. He added that it is only voluntary for the people to disclose the details. </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"><br />'' On the NRC, the Minister said, the erstwhile UPA Government in 2004 has mandated that citizenship card should be given to every genuine Indian citizen. He, however, added that nothing has been decided on the NRC yet. </span><br />
